Oh how we love Rhinestones and Tutus! I placed my first order with this amazing, handmade, mom-owned shop a little over a year ago and it has been my go-to place ever since. Jennifer Stephens is the mama behind the brand and not only does she create gorgeous clothing; she is also one of the sweetest people I know. From dresses, to headwraps, to shorts, to bows, to flower crowns, to leggings, to rompers, to kimonos… she does it all! And she’s been willing to not only create every crazy idea I’ve had, but has pulled them off even better than I imagined. She is on the complete opposite coast as me, but I have sent her photos of t-shirts, asking her to whip me up something to coordinate and have had a package in my mailbox in less than a week. In my eyes, she is magical!!
I interviewed Jennifer this weekend so that you all could have a little sneak peak into this shop and the mom who makes it happen.
When did you start Rhinestones and Tutus and how was it inspired? Did you take a quick leap or did you have the idea to have your own shop for a while?
I started Rhinestones and Tutus in November of 2011. I have ALWAYS wanted to be a fashion designer so when I had my little one and she was one year, I took the plunge. It all started because we were having family photos for our Christmas cards and I made her a snowman tutu outfit. Our photographer thought that it was great outfit and suggested that I sell on Etsy.
Have you always loved to sew and create things?
I have always been creative in one way or another. I have always been a painter. I took sewing classes when I was in my early 20’s but never really did anything with it until I started Rhinestones and Tutus. I am self-taught. Many, many, many nights I’m up on YouTube or reading sewing blogs.
Is there one thing that you love to make the most?
I am the super creative type. So when I get it in my head that something needs to be made, it has to be made right that minute and will be my favorite until the next idea comes. I’m sure I drive my husband nuts! And the bad thing about being so creative is that you can get sick of making an item just the same.
How do you balance running your business and being a full time mom to a little one? (FYI Jennifer’s adorable daughter is just five days older than PR!)
Balance is something I am always working on. Of course any time I take away from my little I feel bad, but I’m working on that. And now that she is in preschool I use every bit of that time working; that way when she comes home we can hang out and do fun things.
Where do you find yourself drawing inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from what’s going on in women’s and kids’ fashion, but also my customers. They usually have the best ideas where I’m like… Why didn’t I come up with that?
Can you give us a few hints as to what we might be seeing in your collection this Fall and Winter?
For this Fall/Winter there will be a lot of back to school items since that is what stage my little is in. She is currently OBSESSED with dresses so I’m sure I will have a ton of dresses in my shop!
When you’re not sewing or hanging with your little, where can you most often be found?
I’m pretty boring now that I’m married and have a child. When I’m not working or hanging with them, I’m probably sleeping lol. I do try to get together with my girlfriends once a month for a girls’ night out.
Tell me more about you!
I was born and raised in the PNW. Love it here but I see my family moving and settling somewhere in the South. My husband is from Arkansas. He moved to Seattle about ten years ago. And we met six years ago…. Aug 1 was actually the date of our first date. We met on Match.com; goodness dating on Match was a nightmare. I was only on there for five weeks when I met my husband. Our first date story is pretty funny. I will save that for another time. But by December 31st, only four months later, we were married in Las Vegas. We had fourteen friends and family show up. It was super fun! But I don’t recommend Vegas on New Year – Way.Too.Crazy. I wasn’t ever going to get married and have kids but when I met him, all that changed. Here we are almost six years later and I couldn’t be happier.
Lately my husband and I both have been working on our fitness. I find when we work out together makes it a little less horrible lol. We also enjoy watching True Blood, Last Comic Standing, Ray Donovan and my most favorite, The People’s Couch. Seriously that show needs to be one continuous season and never go on break.
